Laylah from palace to AZC by the Vroondaal writer Irma Tomey
On September 5, Laylah from palace to AZC by the Vroondaal writer Irma Tomey was festively launched in Restaurant Madestein.
The book is based on the true life story of Laylah, an adolescent girl from the Sudanese elite. Her carefree and luxurious life comes to an abrupt end during a winter sports holiday in Europe. The Sudanese government declares Laylah's father persona non grata and confiscates all his possessions. The family can no longer return to Sudan. What follows is a years-long stay in asylum seekers' centers in the Netherlands and a frustrating wander through the bureaucratic labyrinth. In the end Laylah manages to leave the asylum seekers' center and to build a life of her own. When she later starts working for the IND herself and is in Athens to screen asylum seekers, disaster strikes again.
