A solo theater piece about freethinker Spinoza
A Vroondaal production
Many Vroondaler enjoyed the music theater piece 'The Wonder of Margaretha' in the Loosduinse Abdijkerk in 2017 and then in 2019 of 'The festive existence of Jacob Westerbaen' at the Ockenburgh country estate.
Neighbor Piet Bogaards wrote the texts and Hanneke Besseling did the production and promotion. A new production is now in the pipeline: the solo theater performance 'Spinoza gives a lecture!' on 15, 22 and 29 October in the historic Kloosterkerk on Lange Voorhout.
In a performance of approximately 1 hour, actor Jaap van Dis plays the role of the 17th century freethinker Spinoza. With passion and some humor he tells about his life and ideas, his youth in Amsterdam and about his friends, including the inventor Christiaan Huygens (including the pendulum clock) who was his neighbor in Voorburg.
We follow the philosopher from his previous residences to The Hague, where he lived for seven years until his death in his attic. He also discusses his most important works, including his life's work 'Ethics', the guide to personal happiness.
In between he works on his lens grinder and sometimes he suddenly starts a song, a Sephardic song, with a poetic text about his philosophical themes. The songs are accompanied by concert violinist Janneke van Prooijen, known for her Prisma Trio. It will be a unique experience!
Tip: It might be a good idea to reserve as much as possible for the premiere October 15, so that we can meet again.
Actor: Jaap van Dis, director: Gerard Nelck, author: Piet Bogaards, violin music: Janneke van Prooijen, organization: Hanneke Besseling
